- In the medical field, there are many laws and regulations to protect patient privacy from incorrect distribution. The medical professionals tasked with patient care have a responsibility to understand and implement the standard of care associated with medical documentation. Athletic trainers work in a variety of settings and have different requirements for documentation; however, it is the athletic trainers’ responsibility to protect their patients privacy, themselves, and the companies they work for by understanding and demonstrating proper documentation practices.
- By participating in this course, the participants will review pertinent information regarding medical records and documentation. Participants will review the tenets of HIPAA and FERPA related to medical documentation, discuss best practices in written and electronic record-keeping, and review security standards associated with common Electronic Medical Records software.
- An Emergency action plan (EAP) is a written document created to facilitate and organize actions during workplace emergencies. Without having this plan the likelihood of having an inadequate response to an emergency increases, potentially jeopardizing lives as well as preventable legal ramifications. Athletic Trainers are often responsible for not only the implementation of EAPs but also creating them for their schools. Oftentimes, Athletic trainers lack the knowledge needed in how to appropriately create an EAP and the necessary information that belongs in it.
- By participating in this program the participant will review the various components of creating, implementing and revising an EAP so that they can protect themselves, the organization they work for and most importantly their patients health and safety in the event of an emergency.
