Our History
In 1997, when Mid-Maine Medical Center and Kennebec Valley Medical Center merged, an endowment was developed to support prevention efforts in Kennebec Valley.
The Prevention Center programs are guided by the Community Health Needs Assessment, conducted for central Maine every three years.
In 2013, with funding from the Peter Alfond Foundation, MaineGeneral created the Healthy Living Resource Center to support healthy living and healing by providing educational classes in healthy cooking and eating, physical movement, stress management and mind-body therapies for our patients, employees and communities.
The Prevention Center and Healthy Living Resource Center combined services in July 2015 to form MaineGeneral Prevention & Healthy Living.
In May 2020, the Peter Alfond Foundation endowed MaineGeneral with $40 million to expand innovative approaches to improve lives. The center was renamed the Peter Alfond Prevention & Healthy Living Center.
