Your heart is a muscle that needs regular exercise to stay healthy. If it gets damaged, it needs rehabilitation just like any other muscle.

MaineGeneral's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a fitness program for adults with heart disease. It includes exercise classes and education designed to help you return to a healthy and enjoyable life.

Cardiac Rehabilitation helps people with heart disease enjoy healthier lives by:

  • Reducing risks for coronary artery disease;
  • Improving your heart and lung fitness; and
  • Helping you and your family better understand what you can do, including exercise and changes in diet and lifestyle, to stay healthy and independent.

Starting the Program

Once your health care provider has ordered cardiac rehabilitation you will come in for hour-long classes three times a week for eight to 12 weeks, depending on your needs.

You will be given a structured program of exercise and fitness and take classes on eating healthier and adapting your lifestyle.

Classes are available in Augusta (Alfond Center for Health, 35 Medical Center Parkway) and Waterville (Thayer Center for Health, 149 North Street). Hours vary by location.
