Erik O'Connell, DO, FACP, RhMSUS

This was my first meeting with Dr. O'Connell as my new rheumatologist. He was respectful, thorough, and kind. He asked questions and listened to what my responses were. He explained things very well. He will be a great addition to your team.

Dr. OConnell was kind, caring and compassionate about my condition. He discussed what to do and wrote out directions for the Emergency staff so it would be easier for them to treat me. After my appointment I spent four hours at Emergency, got tested and started treatment for pneumonia.

The only complaint I would have is the fact that it was almost 45 minutes from our appointment to the time that Dr. OConnell came in. I understand that he was busy, but, you know, 45 minutes was sort of, especially when we have driven an hour to get in there. So other than that, everything went well. It's the first time we've met Dr. OConnell, and, you know, it was just a very good experience. That's all.

I truly hope that Dr. O'Connell is here for a long stay!

It was wonderful meeting Dr. OConnell for the first time. He was very kind, gentle, and explained everything in a way that was easy to understand. He made time to listen to me and provided the care that I needed. The staff at Maine General Rheumatology are compassionate and courteous. Living with Ankylosing Spondylitis is difficult, and that is why having the care team that I do at this office is incredibly important. Some things that I would like to note on: 1. The flexibility of scheduling- I am able to easily make, cancel or reschedule appointments and I was even offered an earlier appointment to see my Doctor due to the concerns that I had. 2. The staff- The nurses, the receptionist and my doctor are all amazing and deserve recognition for their quality of care. 3. Communication and Results- I almost always receive prompt response through the patient portal, but if not, I have often recieved a call back and the staff go over results of tests and discuss where we go from there.

The staff was excellent right from the beginning with the entrance staff, the nursing staff. Dr. O'Connell is phenomenal. He explains everything, takes care, listens to my point of view, and is kind, gentle, and explains everything for possibilities of treatment. I definitely would recommend him, and I certainly will be going back. Thank you.

For new patients who have never been to that practice, do you think you could break down and hang a sign, with arrow, clearly designating the correct check-in window versus being directed by neurology staff- you've got rheumatology hidden in a corner. First time patients are lost. Do it!!

Very positive experience. Dr. O'Connell, whom I met for the first time, had read my chart and had educated himself about my history and my condition. I really appreciated that. We could then discuss options going forward.

Dr OConnell was the best Doctor that I have seen in a long time, he was one on one with the patient, very well manner, I really like him, he went over all my medical history with me, I never had a doctor before go over all my medical history right in front of me with his computer, I left his office very well satisfied, I hope he stays with Maine General for a long time . Plus the nurse who took the intake and spend time with me was very nice and caring , plus the lady at the desk was very nice also, my visit was a nice experience no stress at all, a good report

Great experience

Dr. O'Connell was willing to spend quantity time reevaluating my condition and included me in the decision to take a different path of treatment. He listened to me, asked me quality questions and explained the laboratory and X-ray data. He was not typing on the computer while he was talking to me and I never felt like he was in a rush. I left his office confident in his diagnosis and advice and a lot less anxious than when I went in! Thank you.

It was such a pleasure to meet and be treated by Dr. O'Connell. I left feeling so thankful that I had made the right decision on seeking another opinion. Dr. O'Connell checked my x-rays and explained in detail what was happening and followed up with an ultrasound. There was fluid in my knee and he removed some of it to be sent for an analysis. I don't have the results yet but I left his office feeling that I had made a good decision and that he was doing everything possible to help me. He explained every step of what he was doing and was very attentive as to whether or not I was hurting during the procedure. MGMC is very fortunate to have him as part of your team. One of the best experiences I have had in many years. From check in to RN/MA to Dr. OConnell ~ helpful, informative, good listeners, and very patient centered. A lot of practices use the term patient centered, but you don't always experience it. Dr. OConnell is thorough & so knowledgeable & he is able to convey what he knows so the patient understands processes & options.

Dr. OConnell and his team were very professional and gave me expert care. I felt very comfortable and believe strongly I was given the utmost care. Dr Erik OConnell was the best! He spent more than an hour with me asking lots of questions about my history. He made eye contact and listened intently to everything I told him. He offered sound advice, gave me quite the education about my shoulder and was extremely nice. He has a pleasant personality and wonderful bed side manner. I am so happy I have him as my Doctor!

Dr OConnell noticed in the white of my eye that it was inflamed Not being his expertise was so concerned he called my eye surgeon talked right to her and got me an appointment in three hours time. I was very impressed And I and Dr OConnell was very impressed with the check in receptionist because I got to my appointment too early and was able to find an earlier appointment. Because of the earlier appointment I was able to get into the optical surgeon

Well it was hard to get an appointment once there I felt I was the only patient he was seeing that day. He took his time and was very thorough.

I feel like I have been heard. I have a hard time communicating he helped me speak. I felt no judgement finally.

The MA was kind and thoughtful. The doctor spent over an hour getting to me. He looked voraciously through my online records to find more information. The doctor wrote notes on the board to help me better understand my condition. Dr. O'Connell used a holistic approach and I felt as though he truly cared and was empathetic. He seemed to understand my frustrations, wanted to get to the root cause, and find ways to improve my quality of life.

Dr. O'Connell was excellent. Took a good amount of time with me and answered all my questions. Really felt very comfortable with him. Thank you.

The Dr spent more time with me than allotted because he had removed a medication from my list and he wanted to be sure I had coverage. He also did an unscheduled ultrasound of my knee to see why I was in so much pain for the past 6 weeks. He was VERY THOROUGH and explained everything as he went along.

Front desk staff is friendly and efficient and the nurse is sweet and young and cheerful. Both put me at ease right away. Dr. O'Connell was my doctor in Bangor and when he moved to St Mary's in Lewiston, I followed him and then again I followed him to Augusta. He is a wonderful doctor; kind, professional, and knowledgeable. I would follow him to the moon!!

My sister saw Dr. Oconnell when he was In Lewiston and I could not get in to see him. I had inconsistent care at inland and felt they didn't listen to me. I was much impressed by his care and compassion.

I have a somewhat complicated medical history and recently relocated to the area. Dr OConnell had reviewed my chart but also took the time during the appointment to thoroughly understand my history and where I am at now. I appreciated the conscientious evaluation and clear education about a new condition. I am sure that entire visit took additional time for reviewing the chart, and I am appreciative of that time spent. The gentleman that obtained my vitals and checked my medications was wonderful and welcoming. The registration clerk was wonderful and welcoming as well. I left the appointment feeling slightly apprehensive about my own personal medical journey that lays ahead, but I feel like I am in great hands for whatever that journey takes.

He spent a considerable amount of time learning about my specific symptoms and each course of meds that has been used thus far and formulated a plan in the event my current course begins to lose its effectiveness.
