Electroneurodiagnostics
Electroneurodiagnostics is the study and recording of electrical activity in the brain and nervous system.
Tests are performed by experienced registered technologists, interpreted by a neurologist and sent to your referring physician within one week.
Routine Electroencephalogram (EEG)
An EEG records your brain's electrical activity through 26 electrodes placed on your scalp. It helps physicians diagnose a broad range of neurological issues from the common headache and dizziness to seizures, strokes and other neurological disorders.
You can expect your appointment to take about an hour.
About the Test
Please remain still and relaxed, and let us know if we can do anything to make you feel more comfortable.
During your test you may be asked to hyperventilate for three minutes, fall asleep if you can and close your eyes when a strobe light is flashed in front of you. The technician will monitor you very closely at all times.
If you have questions or concerns during these procedures, please feel free and comfortable to ask.
If you have been asked to be sleep deprived, please stay awake 2-3 hours past your normal bedtime and wake up 2 hours earlier than your normal wake-up time. This allows you to be tired for the test and sleep during the recording.
Also, please have someone drive you to the test if you are not comfortable driving yourself while sleep deprived. If you have any questions about these instructions, please call the EEG lab at (207) 626-7290.
Ambulatory EEG
Ambulatory EEGs, also called 24-hour EEGs, are performed much like routine EEGs except the electrodes are glued to the scalp. Your head is wrapped in gauze and you wear the equipment home for the number of hours prescribed by your physician (24, 48 or 72 hours, or longer).
Ambulatory EEG is used for patients who have "funny spells," seizures and unidentified episodes that may not occur during a routine EEG. Ambulatory EEG allows more time for these disorders to be measured and lets patients be comfortable at home.
Children should not go to school and adults should not go to work during this testing time.
