Muscular pain and tension are a frequent complaint among the athletic population. Athletic trainers are frequently assessing patients with these complaints and using manual therapy as a treatment tool. However, most of the knowledge comes from clinical experience and is lacking in a deeper knowledge of the patterns of trigger points and the pathophysiology that can create dysfunction. This program will look to explore the model of trigger points, as well as how to properly assess and treat a patient, as well as refer when needed.
Fascial restrictions can be caused by scar tissue, injuries, surgery, posture, trauma, inactivity, inflammation and repetitive motion/stress. This program will help athletic trainers identify how myofascial cupping can be used as one method of treatment to reduce fascial restrictions to allow athletes to progress more quickly to functional movement training by reducing pain and inflammation.
MaineGeneral Sports Medicine & Colby College Sports Medicine offer On-Demand Trigger Points: Muscles as Access Points & Myofascial Cupping.
CAT A/EBP Presentation
On-Demand
- Mark Sutherland, DO, MaineGeneral Medical Center
- Amber Carriveau, PT MaineGeneral Physical Therapy
Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Understand the pathophysiology of trigger point model in patient care.
- Apply model of trigger point in the assessment of the athlete.
- Recognize when trigger point assessment and treatment could benefit the athlete as well as the process of referral.
- Identify indications and contraindications for cupping.
- Describe the physiological effects and responses to myofascial cupping and why a referral for treatment can assist in the recovery of the injured athlete.
- Identify techniques for external cueing to improve movement patterns in the injured athlete to assist in the successful return to their sport.
